The Turn to Violence

The Turn To Violence permanent exhibit is at the Apartheid Museum and shows the violence in South Africa between 1959 and 1964. In the years of 1959 and 1960, violence began to break out in many South African cities. In March 1960 police fired onto the crowds that were protesting against the laws of Sharpeville. Shortly after this demonstrations against the killings were held throughout the country. This led to the banning of the two main African opposition groups, the African National Congress and the Pan Africanist Congress. by the year 1964 most of the leadership from these two groups had been arrested and jailed. The most famous one the Rivonia arrests and trials of 1963 to 1964.The Turn to Violence permanent exhibit displays the violence of South Africa. It shows what events led to this and what theses events did later.
